Kid Writing is brain based and it works with all achievement levels. In high-poverty low performing schools my co-authors and I get kindergartners writing and reading beyond expectations. No matter how disadvantaged your students are, you can get samples like the ones below. Come see how to make your classroom a joyful, academic, play-based kid writing classroom.”

Overview

Kid Writing for Everyone: Connecting Writing, Reading, Phonics, Spelling, Comprehension,

and Meaning Making

in Academic Play-Based Classrooms

Join Richard for Mobile’s first annual Kid Writing Literacy Institute.

This institute offers you the opportunity to get a pre-publication view of Kid Writing in the 21st Century (in press) and work with internationally respected author, Dr. J. Richard Gentry. Join him for a fun-filled, hands-on and practical three half-day institute for unparalleled staff development geared to exemplary good first teaching of literacy in kindergarten and first grade.

After this workshop, you will be able to meet end-of-year expectations for all students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 with evidence-based outcomes. This staff development aligns perfectly and enhances the Six Traits Professional Development offered by the Mobile County Public School System. It differs in showing you exactly how to get started, what your classroom will look like in the fall and spring, a deep understanding of  Writing Assessments, and everything you need to be an exemplary teacher of writing in grades K and 1.

This staff development is for teachers in both high achieving

and low achieving classrooms.

Learn to observe your students in the five phases of beginning reading from no reading to end of grade 1 reading and writing proficiency through Phase Observation.

Phase Observation, kid writing, and targeted teaching will enable you to meet the needs of each child and move them forward on an evidence-based pathway to reading and writing proficiency by end of First Grade.

The paradigm shift is that you will meet the needs of the child wherever he or she is functioning rather than expect children to meet the needs of the school for high stakes testing. But with the tools you receive in this institute, you will be able to guide children to where they need to be—thereby meeting both goals." GENTRY

Join Dr. Gentry in a journey to beginning literacy success for all children through kid writing. Not only will your students be successful, you will transform your classroom and rekindle the joy of teaching.

Our specific goals include sharing:

  • Methods for making the reading/writing connection to achieve exemplary first good teaching.
  • Strategies, lesson plans, and anchor charts for transforming your classroom into a joyful literacy-learning classroom without worksheets and mindless drill.
  • New easy-to-implement strategies and tools for assessing your students and demonstrating positive outcomes to parents and administrators.
  • Approaches to help your students reach higher levels of achievement.

For a real, hands-on experience, bring some samples of children’s work from your own classroom with you. We will immediately apply what you learn during the institute to your own work and maximize your learning experience.

High quality staff development can be very expensive, especially if travel is involved. Why travel to New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or Miami when you can get the best training right here at home?

Mobile is fortunate to be the home city of one of the nation’s leading literacy experts, Dr. J. Richard Gentry. His 2016 Summer Kid Writing Institute held here in historic Mobile, allows local educators an opportunity to experience high quality staff development where they will come to understand how writing and reading circuitry develop in the emergent reader’s brain.
